Man Ray
Man Ray, original name Emmanuel Radnitzky (born August 27, 1890), Philadelphia, Pensylvania, U.S.— died November 18, 1976, Paris, France, he was most known as a photographer, painter, and filmmaker.
In 1921 Man Ray moved to Paris and became associated with the Parisian Dada and Surrealist circles of artists and writers. Inspired by the liberation promoted by these groups, he experimented with many media. His experiments with photography included rediscovering how to make “cameraless” pictures, or photograms, which he called rayographs. He made them by placing objects directly on light-sensitive paper, which he exposed to light and developed.
Below are some examples of Man Rays work..

As you can see Man Rays photos are a mix between art and photography, as the photos above show it's that there are a mixture between photograms/rayographs, paintings and photos, however they nearly all are black and white, I think these photos have an elegant feel to them, some do not have that much detail in but that's what I like about them is the simplicity of his work.
This photogram by Man Ray is quite central and it gives a 3D feel to it as it looks like the circles are piled on top of eachother. Looking at this image I can see all circles however, some are shaded and others are really sharp and bright, they really stand out. In this photogram there are many curves but some are bigger than others and some are also thicker than the others. Its a very repetitive photogram, there isn't much free space in this image, its mostly occupied with circles. It is very geometric.
The lightest parts are mostly at the bottom and the darkest parts are mostly at the top. This photogram is also by Man Ray, it is also quite a central photo.and again it does not have very many straight lines, it is all mostly curves, circles, mainly geometric shapes. The main object I can see is negatives from photos that have been printed of, they are in loops which gives 3D effect to the photogram. There is only space in the 3 corners, the loop of negatives take up most of the image. The lightest parts in this photogram start from the centre and loops around most of the space. |
